Programme 2017

At evening sessions we work on a topic - each member writing a piece.  Members read out their work (if they wish) and then we discuss each other's contributions in a positive manner. Occasionally we have evenings where material is prepared in advance, allowing us to share longer pieces.

19 January

WORKSHOP: You to Me are Everything: Describe a person (or if you prefer an object or a place) using all five senses, but in an imaginative and natural way (i.e. not just “she sounded like a….", "tasted like a…." etc.)

16 February

PREPARE BEFOREHAND

CRITICS NIGHT: Hold the Front Page: Look in the newspapers for an absurd or striking story. Develop it into a fictional story with one crucial twist- put your mother or father in as the protagonist or transfer events to their home. Bring both article and your story.

16 March

WORKSHOP: Famous Last Lines: You will get a choice of last lines from famous and some not so famous novels, pick one and write you own story (Julie to bring)

20 April

A.G.M. 7.00-8.00pm

WORKSHOP: from 8.00pm - Sounding Board: You will be given a number of sounds to describe on the night. (Julie to bring based on Shirley’s idea)

18 May

WORKSHOP: Eavesdropping: You have a friend who works for GCHQ. For your birthday, they tell you, you can listen to a conversation between any two people you choose. Now write that conversation.

15 June

WORKSHOP: Writing Cube: Carolyn to bring in her story cube and with a throw of the dice we get our tale to tell.

20 July

WORKSHOP: A Song to Inspire: Everyone brings one line from a song of their choosing and we pass them around randomly to each other to inspire either a short story or a character piece.

21 September

WORKSHOP: Doors: Describe your favourite door. Now share with us what is behind it.

19 October

PREPARE BEFOREHAND

CRITICS NIGHT: Into the Darkness: A story or poem set in darkness - e.g. at night, in a cave, electricity failure, storm in the woods or any other dark scenario.

16 November

WORKSHOP: 'Girl on a Train': Chris will read the beginning of this novel, a really vivid description of coming into London Euston station. It will be our inspiration for a railway or urban story or description.

14 December

WORKSHOP: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s...: Imagine you can have a super power or a magical power - what would it be and why, and how might you use it?
